Gas leaks in Springwood
Springwood is in the lower Mountains. Winters are milder than in the upper Mountains, but nights still get cold enough for heaters to run hard.
What is different about Springwood
Some Springwood streets have mains gas and some do not. Homes on bush blocks can still be on LPG. The best check is your gas bill, which shows who supplies you.
Housing is a mix of older and newer homes. Many have a gas heater, a cooktop and a hot water unit, each with its own connection. Every connection is a place for a slow leak.
In homes that have been renovated, kitchens and laundries may have moved and gas lines been extended or capped. Work done years ago without proper testing can cause trouble.
What to do if you smell gas
Strong smell, hissing or someone unwell: leave, then call 000. Leak at the street or meter: Jemena, 131 909. Leak at a bottle: your LPG supplier. Leak in your pipes or appliances: call a licensed gasfitter. The red box at the top of the page has all of this in order.
The repair
A licensed gasfitter will usually test the pipework for pressure loss, find the source, repair it and test again. If regulated work is done, a compliance certificate is part of the job. For the price, ask for a quote before work starts.
Before you sell or rent
A gas check before you sell or rent out a home helps you avoid surprises. See rental gas safety checks.
