Gas leaks in Leura
Leura is a garden village in the upper Mountains, colder than the lower Mountains. Many homes use gas heating from autumn through to spring.
What is different about Leura
Some Leura homes are holiday houses and second homes. They can sit empty for weeks, then get the heater lit on a cold night. A gas appliance that has been off for a while deserves a check before use. Hoses stiffen, pilot lights go out and debris can block burners.
Many Leura homes are older cottages, and some may be heritage listed. In older homes, gas lines were often added after the house was built and can run in awkward places. Sometimes the original pipe is still there, with newer sections joined on.
Some Leura streets have mains gas, while some larger garden blocks use LPG bottles. Your gas bill and a walk around the yard will tell you which you have.
Gardens can cause a problem too. Planting, retaining walls and paving can bury or cover gas lines and bottle areas. Take care when digging. A smell outdoors means a possible leak, so follow the red box at the top of the page.
If you smell gas
Strong smell, hissing or anyone unwell: leave and call 000 from outside. At the street or meter: Jemena, 131 909. At a bottle: your LPG supplier. Inside your pipes or appliances: call a licensed gasfitter.
Fixing it
A licensed gasfitter pressure tests, finds the leak, repairs it and retests. Heritage homes can need care with access and finishes, so mention that when you call. For cost, ask for a quote before work starts.
